What is Trulicity?

If you are looking for a weight-loss drug that can help control blood sugar levels, Trulicity may be a good option for you. Trulicity is a medication that demonstrates reduced blood glucose levels, reduces hunger, and increases fullness in subjects with high BMI by acting as a selective GLP-1 receptor agonist. Trulicity is manufactured by Eli Lilly and comes in the form of a once-weekly injectable dosage.

Trulicity is not recommended for…

  • A patient with a history of pancreatitis.
  • Those with a family or personal history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Those with a family or personal history of medullary thyroid cancer
  • A patient with a previous severe hypersensitivity reaction to dulaglutide or its ingredients.

What are the benefits of Trulicity for Weight Loss?

Trulicity discourages excess eating and promotes eating smaller meals by slowing down the digestive process and suppressing appetite. Further, Trulicity has been shown to improve glycemic control, lowering your chances for adverse cardiovascular events. Injections are only needed once a week, which is better for those who don’t want daily injections or cannot take oral tablets.

How effective is Trulicity for weight loss?

Trulicity is not as effective as other medications containing Semaglutide, but it can still help people lose weight safely through appetite suppression. Combined with a low diet and increased physical activity, participants lost over 10 pounds on average.

How Does Trulicity Work?

Trulicity contains GLP-1, which is a hormone released by the body in response to eating. It regulates appetite and food intake by acting on the brain. Trulicity is a GLP-1 analogue, which signals to your brain that you are full, and reduces cravings and hunger. GLP-1s are a class of chemicals that stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin and reduce blood sugar levels. Decreased insulin levels with Trulicity last about a week or up until the next injection. Trulicity is a medication that mimics the action of naturally occurring GLP-1s in the body, helping reduce blood sugar levels while promoting weight loss.

Generic Name & Medication Class of Trulicity

The active ingredient in Trulicity is dulaglutide. This medication contains dulaglutide, a synthetic peptide that imitates the effects of a hormone called GLP-1. This naturally occurring hormone helps to slow the stomach-emptying process. As a result, Trulicity can help reduce blood sugar levels by impeding sugar absorption within the bloodstream.

A person who has a personal or family history of MTC, a patient who has Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), a patient with a previous severe hypersensitivity reaction to dulaglutide or any of its ingredients, or a patient with a history of pancreatitis should not take Trulicity.

Generic Name and Class

Trulicity contains dulaglutide as its active ingredient. This synthetic peptide works the same way as the hormone GLP-1, which naturally occurs in the body. Due to its ability to slow stomach emptying, dulaglutide makes you feel full after eating. As a result, blood sugar levels are controlled by slowing the rate at which sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Potential Side Effects of Trulicity

Before taking this medication, it is important to know the potential side effects. The most common side effect is nausea or indigestion, which usually resolves within a month. These side effects do not exceed 5% of people who take Trulicity, but they are still worth being aware of.

Some of the potential side effects of Trulicity include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Flatulence
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Dyspepsia
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal distension
  • Eructation
  • Acute kidney injury when taking another similar medication.
  • Decreased blood sugar levels (patients are encouraged to monitor their blood sugar through their usage of Trulicity).

How to Administer Trulicity

Injecting Trulicity using a pen injector syringe is the only method of administering Trulicity. Patients inject Trulicity once weekly beneath the skin’s surface in their belly or upper thigh. Your doctor will guide you through this process so you can do it independently. When not in use, you should store the drug in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.

What is the Dosage for Trulicity?

Your healthcare provider may recommend a specific dosing schedule, but generally, the dose of Trulicity increases gradually over time. This is to minimise the risk of side effects. For example, you have been initially prescribed 0.75 mg of Trulicity once a day, and the dose gradually increases to 4.5 mg.
